Last night, a humid, drizzly evening in Brooklyn Heights, the old-fashioned streetlights near the courthouses made storybook reflections on the sidewalks. Blocks away, below the towering, vaulted ceilings of St. Since Motel Chronicles and Cruising Paradisehis searing, itinerant, and refreshingly genre-defying narrative works have meandered between short fiction and memoir, poem, diary, and myth, drifting in time and territory between Badlands truck stops, border towns, roadside motels, desert ranches, and beyond, heading ever westward.
Patti Smith grew up in a semi-rural, working-class neighborhood in southern New Jersey, across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. Her mother was a waitress and her father worked the swing shift at a Honeywell plant, assembling thermostats. Philadelphia was a thirty-minute bus ride from her home.
Patti Smith: accidental rock star, all-round Renaissance woman and the original punk poet. A skinny woman with a tangle of dark hair and a hacked-in fringe stands before a plain white wall. Gazing at the man behind the camera, her hooded eyes are unreadable.
Seems like just yesterday we were doing interviews around the clock, getting nearly three hundred folks to tell us the most delicious stories we'd ever heard, and writing and editing those stories into one, tight, entertaining, and chronologically-correct narrative. Please Kill Me has become a classic read. It's one of the few things I've done that doesn't make me shudder with embarrassment whenever I pick it up.

Patricia Lee "Patti" Smith born December 30, is an American singer-songwriter and published poet who helped form a foundation for the American version of Punk Rock with her ambitious album Horses. This distinction has to be made here, as on a tour to Britain inwhat might otherwise have been a fruitful collaboration was scuppered by Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols ' sneering on-stage reference to Horses, horses, fucking horses! It had been envisaged that the British and American versions of Punk be brought together with Patti fronting the Pistols in a few covers, but Rotten's clear disdain for what he saw as pretentious twaddle, combined with Smith's reciprocal criticism of the Pistols' lack of basic musical talent, killed that nice sentiment and entrenched the separation between the two schools of Punk.

B ack in the summer ofa young writer named Art Tavana wrote a controversial appreciation of pop singer Sky Ferreira for the LA Weekly. Both Sky and Madonna have similar breasts in both cup size and ability to cause a shitstorm… America has already established that Ferreira looks a lot like Madonna, but we almost never have the audacity to admit that her looks offer the most appeal to the American consumer. Looks matter, they always will. Tavana praised Ferreira as a fashion icon and an accomplished actress and related how she was hated by elitist snobs in the indie scene and decried by feminists when she refused to condemn the photographer Terry Richardson, an accused pornographer and misogynist, adding that she never let her past history of sexual abuse define her.
